It is believed that human disturbance causes a penguin to feel elevated levels of stress. This increased stress makes penguins more volatile and increases the likelihood of them lashing out against their neighbors.

The breeding season can also influence aggressive behaviors in penguins. This is a time in which penguins have increased levels of testosterone and estrogen, which often prompt aggressive encounters. At the start of the breeding season, males are far more likely to engage in inter-sex aggression than are females. Unmated males may be especially aggressive after eggs have been laid. These birds often try to drive away males in a breeding pair to secure mates. This commonly results in eggs being destroyed.

Of course, penguins with eggs and chicks continue to show aggressive behaviors. If neighbors get too close to a penguin parent with young, the parent will certainly let the other penguin know that it needs to give more space.

Although penguins that breed on the edge of a colony are also known to experience greater predation, it is the penguins towards a colony’s center that are often the most aggressive. Those breeding on the periphery of a group may be inexperienced or late breeders, while those in the interior tend to be more experienced and dominant. The increased likelihood of being predated leads to increased stress levels for those on a colony’s edge, but this does not always correlate to increased aggression or dangerous penguins.

Therefore, I would encourage people to avoid passing judgment on an animal’s perceived intelligence, as many animals are not conventionally smart by human standards. However, this does not mean that a creature is dumb or lacks intelligence. Here are some of the things that penguins are capable of doing:

• Penguins can recognize the distinct vocalizations and appearances of hundreds of their counterparts.
• They can relay information to other penguins about prey availability, potential threats, and other information.

What Factors Influence Penguin Behavior?

Penguins can display some surprising behaviors from time to time. So, what factors influence penguin behavior? Well, it turns out that plenty of factors may dictate how a penguin responds to a certain situation. Here are some examples of things that may influence a penguin’s behavior:

• Breeding season
• Stress
• Temperature
• Threats

Wild Penguin Vs. Captive Penguin Behavior

The environment in which a penguin lives can have a significant impact on an individual bird’s demeanor. This is apparent by examining the differences in behavior between penguins kept in captivity and wild penguins. Are penguins friendly to humans or are penguins dangerous to humans if they have been raised in captivity?

You may expect that captive penguins would have lower stress levels, live longer lives, and be friendlier than their wild counterparts, but this is not always the case. Although living in captivity can be cushy for some penguins, the serendipity of this existence can quickly be derailed by visitors. One study examined two groups of Little Penguins – one group was exposed to tourists and the other was sheltered. The results found that the group exposed to the tourists seemed to be fearful of them, causing them to hide from areas in which tourists could view them. However, Little Penguins at places like Phillip Island do not seem bothered by tourists. 

Of course, life in the wild is far more trying than most captive experiences. Even so, wild and captive birds display many of the same behaviors and mannerisms. Penguins are naturally very social creatures. The groups that they form put them at ease and allow them to develop social bonds that help them to succeed in both wild and captive environments.
